Rep. Elizabeth “Betty” Boukus Passes Away

State Representative Elizabeth “Betty” Boukus (D-New Britain, Plainville) passed away early today. Boukus represented the northwest part of New Britain and Plainville in the state House of Representatives.
“I am saddened with the loss of a special colleague and friend,” said State Senator Terry Gerratana (D-New Britain, Berlin, Farmington). “Betty’s long service to Connecticut is a proud record we are all grateful for.”
Governor Dannel P. Malloy directed the Connecticut state flag to fly at half-staff in honor of Rep. Boukus. “Betty Boukus was one of the most passionate and most energetic legislators in the history of the Connecticut General Assembly.” Governor Malloy said. “She loved being an elected official, specifically the opportunity to serve the people of her towns Plainville and New Britain in order to advocate for their best interests – and she made sure everybody knew it.”
Representative Rick Lopes, New Britain’s District 24 assembly member added his condolences, “I am deeply saddened. She was a close friend. I will miss her more than I can say. My feelings go out to her husband and family.”
Representative Sanchez of New Britain’s Ditstrict 25 said, ” I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of the most gracious and humble individuals I have met. Betty was loved and respected by so many and the good work she did for Plainville, New Britain and the State of Connecticut will not be forgotten. My sincere condolences to her husband and family, may she Rest in peace.”
“This is a very sad day for Connecticut,” Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman. “We’ve lost a truly dedicated legislator and an extraordinary woman. I was honored to work with Betty – she always kept the well-being of her constituents at the forefront of all of her efforts. She was smart and well-informed, and even during the toughest debates, she always led with compassion and humor. My thoughts are with Betty’s husband Gary, her children, and grandchildren. I want to thank them and her entire family for sharing her with her Capitol family. She did lasting good work for Connecticut.”
Gov. Malloy added, “With every meeting of any committee that she attended, she brought the ray of sunshine into the room, even on the gloomiest of days. The State of Connecticut has lost one of its most vociferous advocates and honorable public servants, and we are all deeply saddened by her loss. On behalf of the people of our state, I would like Betty’s family to know how much we appreciated her spirit, her generosity, her character, and her service. She will truly be missed.”
