Democratic Legislators Announce Approval of Funding for New Columbus Commons Housing Construction
New Britain state legislators announced the approval of funding for a mixed-use development on the site of New Britain’s old police station. Senator Terry Gerratana (D-New Britain), Representative Bobby Sanchez (D-New Britain), Peter Tercyak (D-New Britain), Representative Rick Lopes (D-New Britain) announced the new building, which will be called “Columbus Commons.”
Senator Gerratana, in announcing the funding, said, “This is something that I have been working on for some time now, and I’m just thrilled that we will finally see this project come to fruition.” She added, “Growing the transit-oriented district around CTFastrak is exactly what New Britain needs to grow our economy and move the city forward. Additionally, the city desperately needs to expand its housing stock, and Columbus Commons will greatly help us do that.”
The $16 million in equity funding was approved by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA), allowing construction to begin on this project. Columbus Commons will be developed to have commercial space available on the first floor, with apartment above. There will be eighty housing units in total. Sixty-four of them will be priced to meet affordable housing guidelines. Columbus Commons will also provide supportive services for eight chronically homeless individuals and eight families with special needs.
“It is encouraging to receive news that the Columbus Commons project is moving forward,” Representative Bobby Sanchez (D-New Britain) said. “The anticipation to seeing this complex completed has been building up and we are thrilled to see funding allocated to keep it going. This development will enhance the appeal and prosperity of our city by creating an area that utilizes smart design to create a family-friendly, walkable neighborhood.”
“I’m so pleased we got this money approved. This project is an important part of New Britain’s future success,” said Representative Peter Tercyak (D-New Britain). “Betty Boukus should be smiling from heaven right now. She worked very hard to secure the bonding that made this project possible.”
“After being awarded $16 million in funding, the Columbus Commons project, which was proposed more than a year ago, is set to become a reality,” said state Representative Rick Lopes (D-New Britain). “This development promises to be a flagship facility. Not only will it revitalize New Britain’s downtown, but it will also serve as a space for the community to gather. It is vital that we continue to invest in our local infrastructure to gain new residents, job opportunities and sources of revenue.”
