Democratic Board of Education member, Merrill Gay, who is running for Mayor in New Britain’s elections this year, has announced that he has raised over $26,000 in the most recent reporting period, bringing his total fundraising to $32,000.
Raising campaign contributions as a challenger is considered to be an uphill battle, and Democrats are calling Gay’s success a sign that he is gaining momentum.
“The energy around this campaign and the slate that Merrill and the team are putting together have everyone kicked into high gear,” said former Mayor and State Senator Don DeFronzo.
“I am proud to be supporting Merrill for Mayor,” said community leader and activist Ron Davis, “and we have a candidate that would truly be a mayor of the people.”
Merrill Gay announced his campaign for Mayor of New Britain in April. While Democrats will not choose their official endorsed candidate until July 20th, Gay is widely seen has having support to be the Democrats’ choice for the November elections.
“Our City has been through so many ups and downs, our focus on economic growth and better management of our resources is being well received,” said Gay, who said that he has knocked on the doors of over 1,500 city residents so far. “Voters are concerned about higher taxes, jobs and New Britain schools.”
Gay added, “I’m humbled by the outpouring of support that’s come from across our New Britain. Residents want to see our storefronts open, they want to have good paying jobs, and they want to know that their futures, and our children’s, are secure. That’s what I’m fighting for. I’m fighting to build a better New Britain.”
