Justin Carlin Named Director of NBHS Golden Hurricanes Marching Band
Justin Carlin, who was a member of the Golden Hurricanes Marching Band, himself, as a New Britain High School student years ago, has returned to lead the Golden Hurricanes as its new Director.
“As a product of the Consolidated School District of New Britain, I am both proud and humbled to be the next band director of the New Britain High School Golden Hurricanes Marching Band,” said Carlin.
The New Britain High School graduate was named to assume the mantle of leadership held by Dr. David Kayser, who recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
“I’m excited to follow in the footsteps of Paul Salina, Chuck Lunn and the late David Kayser,” said Carlin. “I look forward to maintaining the traditions and prominence the Golden Hurricanes are known for while enhancing the musical growth of each student.”
After graduating from New Britain High School, Carlin earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance (Trumpet) from Central Connecticut University and Master’s Degree in Music Performance (Trumpet) from the University of Massachusetts.
Holding certifications in Music Education and ECE UConn, he has most recently been a teacher at the CREC’s Academy of Aerospace and Engineering, teaching Music and Sound Engineering, where he was instrumental in creating and implementing the grade 6-12 general music and instrumental program. He has also worked at Central Connecticut State University, Regional District 17, Granby Public Schools and Deerfield Academy.
“Mr. Carlin brings a wealth of knowledge to New Britain High School in the areas of technology and music theory,” said NBHS Principal, Joseph Pinchera.
Leona Clerkin, Coordinator of Fine Arts, Gifted and Talented, noted that, “Justin Carlin is a graduate of New Britain High School, having studied and performed music under Dr. Kayser. He possesses ECE Music Theory training needed to teach AP Music Theory just as Dr. Kayser held, as well as, a high level of experience with music technology.”
In addition to leading the NBHS Marching Band, Carlin will teach various music classes at the high school.
“The job of band director is a high profile position,” Pinchera added, “which requires an individual who is committed to carrying out the tradition of the Golden Hurricanes Marching Band. As a former Drill Sargent in the NBHS Band, we feel Mr. Carlin is the perfect fit for this role. We are looking forward to many years with Mr. Carlin at the helm.”
“Justin is an excellent fit,” Clerkin said, “with the necessary skills, education and background to build on the tradition and pride of the NBHS Golden Hurricanes Marching Band and move us forward maintaining the very best of the past, but projecting us with strong footing for a vibrant and exciting future.”
There will be a community meet and greet with Carlin on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, in the New Britain High School Lecture Hall.
