Gov. Malloy Announces $1.7 Million in Brownfields Remediation Funding for New Britain
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy (D-CT) has announced $1.7 million in funding for brownfields remediation projects in New Britain as part of a state program to, “assess, remediate and revitalize blighted properties,” and, “and put them back into productive use.”
“These kinds of properties that have been vacant for decades are causing blight in neighborhoods, draining local resources, and having a negative impact on towns and cities,” Governor Malloy said. “We can add value in our communities by making smart investments that repurpose these properties, resulting in a boost for local economies and spurring growth and private investments.”
Statewide, the grant announced totals $13.6 million. The $1.7 million for New Britain is to go to two projects.
A grant of $1.5 million is to remediate 24 Dwight Court. That property is a former coal and oil facility in New Britain’s East Side, near the CTfastrak.
A $200,000 grant will fund two, “assessment projects that will prepare for the future revitalization”. The two locations for these assessments are 1411 East Street and 495 Myrtle Street.
State Economic Development Commissioner Catherine Smith said that the projects, statewide, “will help spur commercial activity, promote transit-oriented development, create new housing, curb blight, and address public health and safety concerns – all keys to boosting economic vibrancy.”
