Mary McLeod Bethune Club Hosts Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration Feb 3rd
The Mary McLeod Bethune Club will kick off Black History Month with a celebration to be held on February 3rd, 2018 at 11:30am.
The theme of the celebration is “Uplifting and Uniting Our Women to Speak up and Speak Out To Make A Difference. When they go low, we go high”
The event will feature guest speaker, Professor Evelyn Phillips, PhD.
Dr. Phillips is Co-Director of the Center for Africana Studies at Central Connecticut State University and is a professor of anthropology at the University.
Black History Month began in 1926, under the leadership of historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson, as a one-week celebration of African-American history. According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), founded by Dr. Woodson, the week was selected because it, “corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln,” and that, “In 1976, this celebration was expanded to include the entire month of February.”
The NAACP says that, “Carter G. Woodson believed that Blacks should know their past in order to participate intelligently in the affairs in our country. He strongly believed that Black history – which others have tried so diligently to erase – is a firm foundation for young Black Americans to build on in order to become productive citizens of our society.”
The Mary McLeod Bethune Club Black History Month Kick Off Celebration will be held on the lower level of the New Britain Public Library, at 20 High Street.
