Award-Winning Author of “The New Jim Crow”, Michelle Alexander, to Speak at CCSU
Michelle Alexander, the award-winning author of the acclaimed book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, will speak at an already-full event at Central Connecticut State University on February 28, 2018.
The New Jim Crow is described as,
a stunning account of the rebirth of a caste-like system in the United States, one that has resulted in millions of African Americans locked behind bars and then relegated to a permanent second-class status—denied the very rights supposedly won in the Civil Rights Movement.
The book has been widely acclaimed and has become a centerpiece of discussion about the imperatives of the civil rights movement in the present era.
The New Jim Crow won the 2011 Image Award for best nonfiction from the NAACP, and Alexander was awarded the 2013 Stowe Prize.
The event at CCSU is at 6:00pm at Welte Auditorium. The event is described as, “a free but ticketed event,” however CCSU’s ticket’s website says that, “All free tickets for this event have been reserved. Please attend event to claim wait list seats that will be released at 6:00 PM.”
The event is sponsored by the Mosaic Committee of the CCSU Student Union Board of Governors with support from the Institute for Regional and Municipal Policy, the CCSU College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Committee on Concerns for Women and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center.
