With the support of most of the delegates from New Britain, former Newtown Town Council member Eva Bermúdez Zimmerman quickly gained momentum at the Democratic State Convention to win nearly forty percent of the vote for lieutenant governor against former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz.
Delegates at the Convention overwhelmingly selected businessperson Ned Lamont over Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim for the endorsement for governor.
But party nominations for lieutenant governor are separate votes from that those for governor. Though Endorsed Democrat Ned Lamont selected Bysiewicz as his running mate, the party can choose to nominate a different candidate.
And, as CTMirror reports, Bermúdez’ candidacy for lieutenant governor, only recently announced, surged forward with surprising speed.
Among those breaking in favor of Bermúdez were New Britain’s Democratic delegates. Twenty-five New Britain delegate voted for Bermúdez over thirteen for Bysiewicz.
Bermúdez not only qualified to run in a primary for the position of lieutenant governor, but she surged, and as the CTMirror reported, “won 40 percent of the vote after only three days of campaigning.”
In the party primaries on August 14, 2018, Democratic voters will be able to choose between Endorsed candidate Ned Lamont and, if he succeeds in gaining the petition signatures to qualify for the primary, Joe Ganim.
The primary provides a separate election for lieutenant governor, which will be between Bysiewicz, as Endorsed candidate, and Bermúdez.
Republicans will also hold their nominating primary on August 14th. That vote will feature, as CTMirror reports as many and six Republican candidates for governor. There will also be a separate primary for the Republican lieutenant governor nomination, as CTMirror reports, between State Senator Joe Markley (R-16), New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart and Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson. Stewart had withdrawn her candidacy for governor, ran for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, instead, and received 26% of the delegate votes for that position.
