Democrats Nominate Gerratana for Re-Election
Democrats endorsed State Sen. Terry Bielinski Gerratana (D-6) for re-election to a fifth term in the State Senate.
Democrats held their Sixth Senatorial District nominating convention on May 22, 2018 at Five Churches Brewing, at 193 Arch Street.
Republicans, last week, announced that they have endorsed the City Council’s Republican leader, Ald. Robert Smedley (R-4), as their candidate for the Sixth Senatorial District.
Gerratana has been a state legislator for nearly eighteen years. She has served as the State Senator for the Sixth Senatorial District, representing New Britain, Berlin and part of Farmington since 2011. She was the State Representative for the Twenty-Third Assembly District, representing neighborhoods in New Britain and Berlin, from 1993 to 2003.
Gerratana is widely considered a strong advocate for improving access and quality of health care. She has served has Chair of the legislature’s Public Health Committee. Her work has included legislation on children’s health care, managed care reform, mental health reform, creating a program for early detection of breast and cervical cancer, addressing opioid addiction, creating a work incentive program for people with disabilities and requiring health insurance to cover forty-eight hour inpatient care for mothers and their newborn infants.
During her time as a State Representative, Gerratana also served in leadership as a committee chair, working as Chair of the Human Services Committee.
From 2007 to 2010 Gerratana served as a member of the State Elections Enforcement Commission.
Gerratana is a lifelong New Britain resident, who has been president of the League of Women Voters for the New Britain area and president of the Junior League of Greater New Britain.
