YWCA Opens East Side Community Center
The YWCA of New Britain held the grand opening of its new Community Center serving the East Side on June 14th 2018.
The center, located at 600 East Street, will serve as the home of the YWCA’s House of Teens program. The YWCA says that,
Many high school girls call YWCA New Britain’s House of Teens their “home away from home.” At the House of Teens, we offer teens a comfortable, safe, and positive place to call their own. It is an afterschool program designed for high school girls ages 13 to 19 that offers teens a variety of activities focused on enhancing healthy lifestyles. The program is dedicated to helping teen girls accomplish their personal goals and gain the confidence and independence they need be future leaders.
In addition, the YWCA plans to use the center as a site for community services for people in the East Side, together with its partners, such as Central Connecticut State University.
The location includes a Career and College Readiness center, a small gymnasium and exercise room, a kitchen and a living and social space.
One of the rooms features photography by kids in YWCA program, highlighting concerns to which the young people wanted to bring the attention of the community.
