While New Britain legislators began a new two-year term of office, Gov. Ned Lamont (D-CT), Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz (D-CT) and other statewide officials were sworn-in to begin work in their work.
State legislators were back at work at the State Capitol to start the 2019 regular session of the state General Assembly.
State Rep. Bobby Sanchez (D-25) was getting ready for his new role as Chair of important legislative Education Committee.
Sanchez said, “I’m still in the process of moving in to my new office on the third floor,” of the Legislative Office Building, the location of the Education Committee’s offices.
Sanchez now leads the Education Committee for the State House of Representatives. In Connecticut, legislative committees are joint committees of the State Senate and House of Representative, so Sanchez will co-chair the committee with the Senate’s Education Chair.
“The people’s work never ends, but I love it and I love my hometown, New Britain,” said Sanchez. “Thank you, everyone for your support, and I’m ready to take on this role as Education Chairman.”
Sanchez thanked New Britain Ald. Iris Sanchez (D-3) and community activists Antonio C Lavoy, Sr. and Elias Vazquez for, “for joining me today at the LOB and State Capitol for our swearing in and Governor’s inauguration.”
State Rep. Peter Tercyak (D-26) took a moment on the busy opening day of session to thank his constituents. “Thank you for sending me to Hartford to continue working on your behalf.”
“Earlier today,” said Tercyak, “we were sworn in to begin serving our new term and I am honored to be given this privilege.”
Other members of the New Britain House of Representatives delegation, State Rep. Rick Lopes (D-24) and State Rep. William Petit (R-22) were sworn-in to the 2019-2020 term of the state legislature.
State Senator Terry Gerratana (D-6) was appointed as a senior health policy advisor in the administration of Gov. Lamont, so the Sixth Senatorial District will be filled in a special election.
Lopes, who has announced that he will run for the Senate seat, received words of encouragement from Sanchez, who said, “I’ll be supporting Rick for State Senate! This man has the experience we need in the Senate!”
The 2019 regular session of the state General Assembly, the state legislature will continue for several months, and conclude at midnight on June 5th.
