New Britain residents joined with others for a rally at the State Capitol in the wake of the latest wave of gun violence in the country.

With signs calling for “smart gun laws” and opposing the National Rifle Association, the crowd gathered to mourn the recent loss of life to gun violence and call for action to address the problem.

The protests were in response to the weekend mass shootings, as reported in the Washington Post, in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Protesters at the rally carried signs saying “disarm hate” in opposition to bigotry-motivated violence. CNN reports that authorities in El Paso are investigating whether the suspect in the shooting there is the author of an online post appearing, “less than 20 minutes before police received the first calls about the El Paso shooting,” adding that post, “is filled with white nationalist and racist hatred toward immigrants and Hispanics, blaming immigrants and first-generation Americans for taking away jobs and the blending of cultures in the US.”

Gov. Ned Lamont (D-CT) lead other elected officials who spoke at the rally.
