The Service, held in New Britain on January 1st, celebrates the Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued 157 years ago by President Abraham Lincoln.
The 2020 Emancipation Proclamation Day Service will be held at 2:00pm on January 1, 2020.
The event will be held at Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church, and Spottswood’s Pastor, the Rev. Samuel Blanks, will be the Host Pastor for the Service.
The keynote Speaker at the 2020 service is to be Rev. Roosevelt Lee of Peace Missionary Ministries.
South Church Pastor Jane Rowe will be the Honoree at the event.
The Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect on January 1, 1863, freed millions of the people who had been held in slavery in states rebelling against the United States during the Civil War. Slavery was later abolished nationwide on December 6, 1865 by the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution.
According to the National Archives,
After January 1, 1863, every advance of federal troops expanded the domain of freedom. Moreover, the Proclamation announced the acceptance of black men into the Union Army and Navy, enabling the liberated to become liberators. By the end of the war, almost 200,000 black soldiers and sailors had fought for the Union and freedom.
Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church is located at 25 Crestwood Lane, which is off of Country Club Road.
