Berlin Resident Announces Plans to Run for Senate

Berlin resident Andrew Legnani has announced that he plans to run for the Sixth State Senatorial District in the 2020 elections.

Earlier in the week, on February 12, 2020, Democratic State Rep. Rick Lopes (D-24) announced that he is running for the Sixth Senatorial District, which represents New Britain, Berlin and part of Farmington.

Legnani, a Democrat, also issued an announcement this week of his candidacy for the seat in a letter seeking support for his campaign.

Legnani is a Berlin Parks and Recreation Commission member, who says that, “I understand through my experiences as a commissioner, working professional and native of this community where we stand on the key issues facing this community such as our financial affairs and the healthcare coverage that our citizens receive.”

As of February 16, 2020, Lopes and Legnani are the only candidates for the Sixth Senate with campaigns filed, according to State Elections Enforcement Commission records, but it is widely expected that State Sen. Gennaro Bizzarro (R-6) will seek re-election.

Official major party endorsement conventions are in May. Lopes is widely expected to be endorsed at the Democrats’ convention. Any primaries for party nominations would be August 11, 2020.

The elections for state offices this year are held at the same time as the election for President and Congress. That general election is on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
