Nzinga’s Daughters’ to Present Underground Railroad Performance
Nzinga’s Daughters will present their Underground Railroad performance at the New Britain Public Library this morning.
Event organizers say, “Experience the creativity, ingenuity, and perseverance employed by African-American slaves in their efforts to shepherd runaway slaves to safety via a series of poignant vignettes.”
The performance is to be held at 10:00am on February 29, 2020.
New Britain’s Queen Ann Nzinga Center says that, “Nzinga’s Daughters is an ensemble of women who share their gift of song and prose from the East Coast of the USA to the West Coast of Africa.”
The Center says that,
Nzinga’s Daughters are best known for their “Underground Railroad” performance. They perform both adult and youth adapted versions. The program invites the audience to experience the creativity, ingenuity, and perseverance employed by African-American slaves in their efforts to shepherd runaway slaves to safety. Because slaves were prohibited from learning to read or write, they developed an elaborate system of communication which included embedding coded messages into the verses of Negro spirituals.
The performance is to be held in the Community Room at the New Britain Public Library.
The Library is located at 20 High Street.
