Anti-Racism Protests Planned in New Britain
At least two anti-racism protests are planned in New Britain as nationwide demonstrations occur in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.
The killing of Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and other African Americans have sparked vigorous protests against ongoing racism in the nation.
A “Call for Justice” event is planned for today, May 31, 2020, at 4:00pm in Walnut Hill Park. The rally, organized with the hashtag #BLM, or Black Lives Matter, is planned to occur at the Darius Miller Bandshell in the park.
“Join us for a peaceful rally/march for change,” organizers say.
“I hope to see you there!!!” said Chris Porcher, the 2019 Democratic Mayoral nominee, who noting the Walnut Hill park demonstration, “is organized by Tre Brown.”
“I was not and will not participate in a protest organized by the city. We have many racial issues that have not been addressed,” saying,
A protest does not need a program!! What we need are leaders to take accountability for a less than diverse police department, mayors office etc. Join us by being on the other side willing to listen. Don’t hide by pretending to march with us.
When Mark Zenobi steps down from the water commission I will be open to conversation. Mark retired with with his medical benefits and pension and was still appointed to the water commission after racially harassing Vincent Rogers.
“Please wear a mask!!!!!” Porcher added.
Then, on Tuesday June 2nd at 5:30pm, the New Britain Branch of the NAACP is organizing an online Town Hall. The event is to have at least two speakers, United States Representative Jahana Hayes (D-5) and 2019 Democratic Mayoral nominee, Christopher Porcher.
The purpose of for the NAACP Town Hall is to begin developing a Black Community Agenda for New Britain. The details of how to participate in the event, to be held using the Zoom teleconferencing service, are to be announced. The event is to be open to the first one hundred people who register to participate.
