League of Women Voters Seeks Debate Questions

The New Britain Area League of Women Voters is seeking questions to be asked of local legislative candidates at its candidate forum this year.

“The New Britain Area League of Women Voters wants your questions for the 2020 Legislative Forum,” the organization says.

“We have invited candidates for the state Senate and state House who represent the New Britain area,” says the League.

“Questions will be asked of all the candidates,” the organization says, “so please send questions about state issues that apply to all candidates.” The League inviting people to submit questions on its Facebook page, at facebook.com/LeagueOfWomenVotersNewBritainArea.

The candidate Forum, sponsored by the New Britain Area league of Women Voters, is to be played on Nutmeg TV.

State legislative seats up for election in 2020 include:

  • The Sixth Senatorial District, in which incumbent Republican Sen. Gennaro Bizzarro (R-6) is being challenged by current Democratic State Rep. Rick Lopes (D-24). The District includes all of New Britain, all of Berlin and part of Farmington.
  • The Twenty-Second Assembly District, which is mostly in Plainville, but includes the north-western part of New Britain. Incumbent Republican State Rep. William Petit, Jr. (R-22) is running unopposed.
  • The Twenty-Fourth Assembly District, in which the Democrat, Ald. Manny Sanchez (D-AL), and Republican Alden Russell, are running. The district includes the West End, Willow Brook and southern East Side neighborhoods in New Britain and the south west corner of Newington.
  • The Twenty-Fifth District, in which incumbent Democratic State Rep. Bobby Sanchez (D-25) is being challenged by Republican Jerrell Hargraves. The district includes neighborhoods from Mount Pleasant, to downtown and Arch Street, to the North-Oak neighborhood to parts of the East Side.
  • The Twenty-Sixth District, in which incumbent State Rep. Peter Tercyak (D-26) is being challenged by Republican Piotr Ceglarz and Libertarian Jonathan Milon Johnson. The district includes the Little Poland, Farmingdale, Little Warsaw, Alexander Avenue, Batterson Pond, Brittany Farms and Stanley park neighborhoods and parts of the Belvedere neighborhood.

The League of Women Voters says that it,

is a non-partisan, political organization of women and men. We do not support candidates or parties, but we do support issues which are selected by our members. We are involved in Candidate Debates, Voter Registration, Voter Service Activities, we present topical discussions and lobby for League supported issues at the local, state and federal levels. We also enjoy each others’ company!
