Diaspora Holding Collection for Prudence Crandall
The Diaspora Multicultural Society, Inc. is holding a supplies collection to benefit the Prudence Crandall Center‘s shelter.
“Local women’s shelter, Prudence Crandall Center, is currently at double their ordinary capacity,” says Diaspora Foundation Executive Director, Wilma Barbosa-Holley, “The need and crisis continues to increase in these difficult times.”
Barbosa-Holley says that the call for supplies includes pillows, twin sheet sets, twin comforters, bath and hand towels, women’s and children’s underwear of all sizes, women’s leggings, yoga or sweatpants of all sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL) and women’s bras, all sizes (L, XL, XXL).
The Diaspora Society is asking donors to drop off supplies at the Society at 90 John Street this week, from Tuesday, February 2, 2021 to Friday, February 5, 2021.
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, donations can be made from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, and on Friday from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.
The Society says that cash donations are also being accepted at a link available on its Facebook post and that, “We also accept CashApp ($DiasporaMS), please note ‘shelter’.”
Prudence Crandall Center, Inc., located in New Britain, says that it,
is the oldest domestic violence program in Connecticut. PCC offers comprehensive services to women, men, and children who are victims of domestic violence and is the only domestic violence program serving these nine Connecticut towns: Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Kensington, New Britain, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington, and Terryville.
The Diaspora Multicultural Society is has said that, “is a diverse social club that hosts events that appeal to many interests- from socially conscious programming to partying/laid back good times.”
Diaspora has said that its programs include,
Monthly events free to the community – various formats such as forum, guest speakers, community conversations, film viewings, and gallery walks. Topics are diverse and aim to build understanding of underrepresented populations (e.g.: women, people of color, LGBTQ+, Autism and other differently-abled people).
The organization is well known for its annual Multicultural Festival which it has said, “further serves Diaspora’s mission of bringing together a diverse crowd to commingle and build community.”
