Democrat Richard Lacourciere has announced that he will seek election to an At-Large seat on the New Britain City Council.
“I’m excited to announce my candidacy to run for Alderman at large here in New Britain,” said Lacourciere.
“I’ve spent the last few years talking to thousands of our neighbors and hearing the issues that are most important to them,” said Lacourciere. “These are the issues that are most pressing for our community and we need leaders who aren’t afraid to take on the hard challenges.”
Lacourciere said that these issues include, “working to reinvest police funding back into our community, not allowing absentee property investors to treat our community as just an item on their portfolio and making sure we support our schools and the families that our students come from properly.”
Lacourciere was candidate for the Democratic nomination for State Representative in the 2020 election, seeking the seat held until this year by Sen. Rick Lopes (D-6). Lacourciere ran a strong campaign in the Democratic primary. After now-Rep. Manny Sanchez (D-24) won that primary, Lacourciere won wide praise for endorsing Sanchez, who went on to win the November general election for the seat.
As a candidate, Lacourciere had campaigned on a labor progressive platform. He has been active in supporting labor rights and anti-racism policies. His candidacy in 2020 was endorsed by the New Britain Racial Justice Coalition, which said that he, “understands that basic needs are not being met at all in Connecticut, especially during these times in a pandemic. He understands the inequalities and racism that still plague our state.”
“New Britain is a community of amazing and wonderful people,” said Lacourciere, “but unfortunately most of our politics and politicians have not reflected that.”
“It’s time we believe in ourselves,” Lacourciere said, “and our future that we can build together!”
