Wreath Laying Ceremony Honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to be Apr 17th
There is to be a Wreath Laying Ceremony in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 12:00pm, with refreshments available at 11:30am.
The annual Ceremony is to be held at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at the corner of Stanley Street and Smalley Street.
The New Britain Progressive had earlier reported that the Ceremony was to be April 10th, but the event was postponed.
New Britain traditionally celebrates the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in ceremonies on two days each year. The community celebrates Martin Luther King Day each January, with most of the rest of the nation.
The New Britain community also annually celebrates the Rev. Dr. King and the continuing work of the Civil Rights Movement each April, commemorating his assassination on April 4, 1968.
At the time of his assassination, Dr. King was in the middle of organizing the Poor People’s Campaign, proposing a progressive set of reforms that would have guaranteed for everyone in the nation decent paying jobs, guaranteed minimum incomes, decent housing, quality education, participatory democracy and universal health care.
Editor’s note: The New Britain Progressive apologizes for not publishing an update on the rescheduling of this year’s Ceremony sooner.
