The film is widely considered a cult movie. Writing for Huffington Post, Curtis M. Wong said that,
When “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” was released in 1975, it was a critical and commercial failure. Shortly thereafter, however, the film began gaining a cult following thanks to late-night screenings, first at cinemas in New York and, eventually, in other cities across the country and around the world.
In its article, “‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Taught Entire Generations to Embrace Queer Expression,” Tom and Lorenzo writes that, “In many ways, The Rocky Horror Picture Show represented one of the biggest cultural triumphs of the queer art community immediately post-Stonewall,” adding, “It’s long been described as a ‘cult film,’ but no film with this much lasting influence and this many fierce fans could ever truly be seen as something hidden or unknown to the public.”
June Thomas, writing for Slate, said,
Just five months into its run at the Waverly Theatre in New York, people started talking back at the movie, and soon after that, costumed players began to stage parallel performances in front of the screen—in full replica costumes and makeup.
Audience responses to the film’s dialogue and various audience props coinciding with the movie’s plot also became part of the traditions of the cult following of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
