Fire broke out today in front of the long-blighted Berkowitz building on Main Street, apparently engulfing a piece of construction equipment at the site.
Construction work had appeared to be underway at the site at the time. The piece of equipment that appeared to be on fire was apparently a type of lift commonly used in construction and building maintenance.
Fire fighters arrived on the scene within minutes and quickly extinguished the flames. However, the corner of Main Street and North Street remained closed to traffic by police and fire fighters for a considerable time.
The fire did not appear from an eyewitness to have caused significant damage to the building.
