Lamont Comes to New Britain to Dedicate Hispanic Heritage Month
Gov. Ned Lamont (D-CT) and other dignitaries gathered at Criollisimo Restaurant in New Britain to dedicate Hispanic Heritage Month in the state.
Rep. Bobby Sanchez (D-25) said, “A huge shout out to Brenda Torres for 33 years as a Hispanic business woman in our city and owner of Criollisimo!”
“Elected officials present,” Rep. Sanchez added, included, “Governor Lamont, House Majority Leader Jason Rojas, Rep. Manny Sanchez, Rep. Hilda Santiago, Rep. Ed Vargas, Rep. and Chair of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus Gerry Reyes, Mayor Erin Stewart, Councilman Paul Cantazaro and 3 Hispanic State Commissioners!”
Gov. Lamont issued an official proclamation declaring September 15th to October 15th Hispanic Heritage Month in Connecticut, honoring that, “Connecticut is home to over 623,000 citizens of Hispanic heritage — whose many accomplishments greatly enrich and contribute notably to our state’s cultural, civic, and economic prosperity.”
Hispanic Heritage Month, the Governor’s proclamation says, provides, “an annual inflection point for us to celebrate the diversity of Hispanic culture, and the contributions it has bestowed upon our shared community through literature, music, painting, philosophy, and more,” adding that, “Hispanic Heritage Month also provides our citizens the opportunity to show reverence and gratitude toward the people in Connecticut’s Hispanic community who work tirelessly for the betterment of our state and the people who live here.”
The Governor’s proclamation goes on to note that, “with the signing of Public Act No. 19-12 in June 2019, Connecticut has for another year been a leader in the nation in teaching inclusive, progressive curriculum in our high schools to educate students on the significant historical, societal, economic, and cultural impacts of Hispanic people and institutions in the United States throughout history.”
