Lopes Lauds Lamont for $2 Million New Britain Transportation Grant

Sen. Rick Lopes (D-6) thanked Gov. Ned Lamont (D-CT) after the Governor awarded $2 million for transportation improvements in New Britain.

The funding to New Britain is for:

$2,000,000 to improve pedestrian infrastructure, erect bus shelters, and implement Complete Streets enhancements to provide better connectivity to alternative methods of transportation. This first phase will span 2,600 feet along Myrtle Street, between Washington Street and Curtis Street.

“My thanks to Governor Lamont and his administration for their shared recognition of how these improvements to Myrtle Street will benefit long-term community development in New Britain,” said Lopes.

Gov. Lamont said that “Investments in transportation infrastructure are investments in the future of our communities, our residents, and our businesses. Transit-oriented development is more than asphalt and train tracks, it is a comprehensive approach that drives businesses and residents to call our state home.”

The transportation funding, Gov. Lamont said, “will spur further growth, creating the type of state that we all want for our future.”

Sen. Lopes called the funding for New Britain, “a major boost to improving 2,600 feet of street area and improving access to public transit.”

The funding is part of the state Transit-Oriented Development Grant Program, which the Governor’s office says,

provides grants for shovel-ready capital projects located within one-half mile of existing public transportation facilities and promotes the development of infrastructure with the goal of creating walkable, mixed-use spaces that support vibrant, sustainable, and equitable communities.

New Britain is one of six municipalities to benefit under the competitive grant program. Other municipalities receiving grants were Ansonia, Madison, Norwalk, Seymour and Stamford.

New Britain and Norwalk both received the highest amounts of the six benefitting communities, both at $2 million.
