Staff Reports
NEW BRITAIN – November 1 was the last day to register to vote across Connecticut to be officially on the rolls before the November 8th state election. In New Britain, Registrars of Voters counted 33,731 voters as of Friday, October 28th.
Residents not registered, however, still have an option to register and vote on Election Day at New Britain City Hall. Once registered, new voters will be issued a ballot in accordance with their voting address and will cast their ballots at City Hall.

Redistricting resulting from the 2020 U.S. Census has changed voting district lines and means new polling places for some residents in the city. Registrars have retained 17 voting districts but relocated or added new polling places. In the 24th Assembly District St. Maurice Church Hall has replaced nearby Slade Middle School. St. Jerome Church Hall has replaced DiLoreto School on Slater Road. In the 26th Assembly District, the Crystal Ballroom on Farmington Avenue is a new polling place (District 15) formerly located at HRA New Britain.
New Britain voters will choose candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor, U.S. Senator, U.S. Congress (5th), State Senator, State Representative, Secretary of the State, State Treasurer, State Comptroller and Attorney General and Judge of Probate. Question 1 on ballots asks voters to approve a constitutional amendment to permit early voting in CT which is one of only four states without that option. Questions 2 and 3 involve controversial changes to the City Charter that would make the Tax Collector and Town and City Clerk appointive instead of elected positions and install a permanent city manager in the Mayor’s office to perform all administrative functions.
Registrars of Voters reported prior to the November 1st registration deadline that 44% (14,888) of New Britain voters are Democratic, 42% Unaffiliated (14,267) and 12% Republican (4121).
This year’s state election is a rematch between Governor Lamont and Republican Challenger Bob Stefanowski. In 2018 Lamont defeated Stefanowski with 63% of votes cast. U.S. Cong. Jahana Hayes four years ago defeated Manny Santos in New Britain 71% to 26%. There were 31,108 eligible voters in 2018 and the turnout for the last gubernatorial race was 54%.
