Top 10 of 2022: #10: New Britain Support for Ukraine
The suffering of the Ukrainian people has been a major concern for many people in New Britain as Russia carried out a war of aggression against its neighbor.
The invasion has drawn widespread condemnation from people across New Britain, as well as support for the people of Ukraine affected by the largest war in Europe since World War II.
In addition to New Britain’s Ukrainian ethnic population, the city’s large Polish community and others have rallied to support the Ukrainian people.
The City Council approved a resolution in support of Ukraine in March. Before unanimous passage of the resolution Ward 3 Alderperson Aram Ayalon, City Assessor Mike Konik and others shared their families roots in the Ukraine in testimony demonstrating the city’s strong connections to the country that gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991.
Funds were raised to support the Ukrainian people suffering due to the invasion.
And New Britain became the focus of high-level discussion about the policies of the United States in support of Ukraine.
As in every year, there was so much news that the New Britain Progressive covered 2022 that choosing our traditional Top Ten stories of the year is difficult. But how much the people of New Britain have rallied in support of the people of Ukraine made this one of the New Britain Progressive‘s Top Ten Stories of 2022.
