George Sebastian-Coleman’s play “Stranger Still” is to open at New Britain’s Hole in the Wall Theater this Friday, April 21st.
The Theater says that “Stranger Still”,
is based upon Albert Camus’ L’Etranger, but imagining the character as having his sentence commuted to life on “Devil’s Island” the prison island off French Guiana. The setting is the present, and now somewhere in his 90s, he runs a cafe in Kourou, French Guiana, having become a trustee when the prison closed. He now watches the lives of his patrons–all as interested or disinterested in their existence as he.
The play is written & directed by George Sebastian-Coleman and produced by Luis Marrero.
The Hole in the Wall Theater published comments from Sebastian-Coleman that, “Stranger Still had its beginnings in a project by Steve Ersinghaus and Carianne Garside who challenged themselves to a 100 day project: Carianne would paint a picture and send it to Steve and he would write a poem in response to it. The next year they invited others to join them and the first draft of my play was the result.”
Sebastian-Coleman describes how, in 2017 the Oracle Theatre Company in New York hosted a staged reading of the play. After the Oracle Theatre Company went, “on hiatus,” the project was delayed.
“I’m very grateful to all those early influences and particularly to the entire Hole in the Wall community for their support in finally seeing the play finally produced,” Sebastian-Coleman. “Most especially I am grateful to and proud of my cast who have truly brought it to life.”
“Stranger Still” opens on Friday, April 21, 2023 and continues to May 6th
Tickets for the play are available at the Theater’s tickets web page. General admission, the Theater says, is $25 and, for students and seniors is $20.
The Hole in the Wall Theater says that it, “has been a staple of the New Britain arts community for over 50 years. Through the hundreds of shows we’ve produced, our mission has always been to make theater accessible to everyone.”
