Ceremonies Mark A National Holiday In Poland

HARTFORD- Polish Constitution Day (Święto Konstytucji) will be commemorated on Wednesday, May 3rd as part of the 32nd annual “Polish Day at the State Capitol.”
State Representative Peter Tercyak (D-26) will host the event and will be joined by Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz and other Polish American legislators and guests to mark the day that is a national holiday in Poland.
The ceremony begins with a flag raising ceremony on the South Lawn of the Capitol at 11 a.m.
followed by a celebration in the North Lobby.

In Poland, Constitution Day is part of a holiday season known as Majówka, which also includes the May 1/Labor Day holiday. It is celebrated with military parades, spring concerts and family picnics. Many people also gather at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Grób Nieznanego Żołnierza) at the Piłsudski Square in Warsaw. The monument is dedicated to unknown soldiers who gave their lives for Poland. The Polish Constitution was adopted in 1791 two years after the U.S. Constitution was adopted with the Bill of Rights in 1789.
A member of New Britain’s legislative delegation has traditionally led Polish Constitution Day observances over the last 30 years, including Rep. Tercyak’s late father, Rep. Tony Tercyak (R-26) and the late State Rep. Stanley Krawiec (D-26). New Britain has historically had the largest population of residents of Polish backgrounds in Connecticut and is home to “Little Poland.”
