The Black Matriarchs Series Exhibit on Display at New Britain Museum of American Art
The Black Matriarchs Series Exhibit is being shown at the New Britain Museum of American Art through December 31, 2023.
Community leader J. Elizabeth Nkonoki-Ward says that people can, “Enjoy viewing portraits of local New Britain, CT Black Matriarchs from the 1920’s through 1990’s who influenced the lives of New Britain’s Black youth (Laura Bellamy; Agnes Timmons; Jessie Lorraine Gay; Mary Diggs; Meana McDew; Alice Barns; Jane Jordan; Virginia Morehead; Hazel Jackson; Martha Mosley and youth representative, Monica Willis, now Dr. Monica (Willis) Parker).”
“These women were members of the Every Woman’s Club,” Nkonoki-Ward says, adding
Some members were a part of the AKA and the Deltas Sororities. Some were members of local churches (Union A.M.E. Zion Church (now known as Spottswood A.M.E. Church. Some were members of McCullough Temple C.M.E. Church, now known as Grace C.M.E. Church. Some were members of St. Joseph Catholic Church now merged as a part of Divine Providence Parish. All were members of the NAACP local branch and encouraged our Black youth to be proud of who they were, to love God, to get a good education, go to college and graduate, then come back to improve the lot of Black people in their hometown community.
The exhibit is on display from, 11:00am to 5:00pm, Wednesday through Sunday, each week until December 31st.
