Opinion: Candyce Scott Would Bring Conscience and Work Ethic to Council
Dear Friends,
While I do not live in Ward 3 — I live in Ward 1, where I will be voting for Richard Lacouriere and Nate Simpson — my street is a Ward line and Ward 3 is across the street from me. So I would offer to my neighbors how happy I am for them that Candyce Scott might soon be representing them on the City Council. She is running to join current Ald. Iris Sanchez (D-3), as one of the three Council members to represent Ward 3.
Candyce is a dynamic person, who always has multiple irons in the fire. She is someone who is so creative that she is able to meld together different things, like a social justice campaign and a fashion show, into something that is exciting, empowering, uplifting and fun.
Candyce’s professional career is about helping people. She owns and directs counseling services for Insight of New England Counseling, LLC and she is the creator of the non-profit, youth mentoring SURE Program. She also owns the Gorgy By Candy fashion line that is built around empowering youth and celebrating diversity.
Candyce has been a counselor for children for sixteen years. She holds a Master’s Degree in psychology and she has an Advanced Graduate Certificate from CCSU in Professional Counseling. She also earned her BA in Psychology CCSU after earning an Associates Degree in Social Services from Capital Community College.
The best advocates in the community wear many hats, and Candyce wears a lot. She is on the Executive Committee of the New Britain NAACP, as Youth Advisor and, serving on the NAACP Economic Development Committee, co-hosts its monthly Multicultural Economic and Development meeting. Candyce is a member of the New Britain Racial Justice Coalition, and worked with Mr. Alton Brooks and Colin Ivan Osborn, who is, himself, running for Board of Assessment Appeals, to re-activate the Black Democratic Committee.
Good representation requires leaders who are not just interested serving as representatives, but also empowering people, something that the residents of New Britain’s most economically challenged, meaning oppressed, neighborhood, truly need. Candyce has all of the qualities needed for that important purpose. I hope that the residents of Ward 3 vote in this year’s election, and I wish for them the excellent representation that Candyce Scott will provide when they elect her.
Sincerely,
Tim O’Brien
