Tax Abatement Proposed for Schaller Auto Expansion

The New Britain City Council’s Committee on Administration, Finance and Law and Public Services is set to consider a business tax abatement phasing in increased assessments on renovation and expansion by Weezy LLC, La Provence Realty, LLC and Schaller Auto World for facilitates on Veterans Drive.

The resolution proposing the abatement, proposed by Ald Robert Smedley (R-4), would phase in the assessment on, “the combined projects costs are estimated to be twelve million dollars,” “to completely refurbish two buildings located at 1 Veterans Drive and 25 Veterans Drive in addition to razing the current service drive to build a brand new service center, doubling the size.”

The tax abatement, the resolution says, “would phase in the increase in the tax assessment of the real estate over a ten (10) year period commencing at ten (10%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2025, twenty (20%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2026, thirty (30%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2027, forty (40%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2028, fifty (50%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2029, sixty (60%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2030, seventy (70%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2031, eighty (80%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2032, ninety (90%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2033, one hundred (100%) percent increase of the tax assessment on the Grand List of October 1, 2034.”

The resolution says, “the Schaller family is committed to retaining ownership in the City of New Britain in addition to serving the community for over seventy-one years in sales, repair and corporate citizenship,” and that the improvements to the facilities would involve, “retention and anticipated hiring of additional employees.”

There will be a public hearing on the proposal on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at 6:30pm in the Council Chambers in City Hall.
