NAACP State Council President Scot X. Esdaile led a crowd of 150 in celebrating the swearing in of newly elected New Britain NAACP President Jan E. Edwards and other New Britain NAACP officers in a ceremony Tuesday evening.

Other newly elected officers included First Vice President, Dr. Violet Jimenez-Sims, Treasurer Samuel Simmons, Assistant Treasure Kim Burkes, Secretary Rhona Cohen and Assistant Secretary Valeria Burkes-Hernandez.

State NAACP First Vice President Virginia L. Monteiro, State Rep Bobby Sanchez (D-25) and State Rep Manny Sanchez (D-24) were joined by a number of City Council members and other dignitaries at the event.

Esdaile spoke about the history and mission of the NAACP, and how the organization is an advocacy organization needed to fight against racism and for equality.

Edwards spoke about the pride she has in her family’s legacy and, pointing to her own grandchildren in the room, how it is important that the NAACP fight for children’s future.
Edwards said she is looking forward to the work ahead, fulfilling the mission of the NAACP to achieve equality for everyone.

“Honored to attend the NAACP swearing-in ceremony and witness the leadership transition to incoming President Jan Edwards!” Rep Sanchez said online. “The fight for justice, equity, and opportunity is more important than ever, and I look forward to working together to move our community forward.”
The NAACP was founded in 1909 and is the nation’s oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization.
