Democrats Endorse Bobby Sanchez for Mayor

Democratic State Representative Bobby Sanchez (D-25) was endorsed by the Democratic Party tonight to be its candidate for Mayor of New Britain.

“Born, raised, and deeply rooted in the city,” Sanchez’ campaign website says, “Bobby has spent decades fighting for the issues that matter most to New Britain families—as an early childhood educator, shelter director, and State Representative for 14 years.”

Sanchez, who has represented New Britain’s Twenty-Fifth Assembly District in the state House of Representatives since 2011, has often been lauded for his work in supporting funding for New Britain schools, which, together with other New Britain legislators, has significantly increased state aid to the city and city schools. He has been named as a “Children’s Champion” by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance.

Sanchez’ official biography has said that he, “is a longtime leader in the New Britain community. Before joining the state legislature, he served on the New Britain Board of Education, where he was a strong voice for quality education and efficient administration.”

Sanchez’ website also says, “New Britain’s potential is incredible, but for too long, it has felt out of reach for too many families. Bobby believes that together, this can change.”

In his acceptance speech, Sanchez discussed the drainage infrastructure in need of improvements affecting the neighborhood between Allen Street and Roxbury Road near CCSU neighborhood. That neighborhood has been facing serious problems with flooding because of overdue infrastructure improvements.

Sanchez’ website adds that he plans to, “focus on:”

-Expanding early education and building a new high school at no cost to residents.
-Boosting the economy with job training programs and small business support.
-Capping tax and utility increases to help families stay afloat.
-Restoring community policing to ensure every neighborhood is safe.

Earlier this week, the Republican Party endorsed Republican City Council Assistant Leader, Ald Sharon Beloin-Saavedra (R-1) as their candidate for Mayor.

If no one challenges either candidate in a primary for the nomination of their party, this year’s mayoral election will be between Democrat Sanchez and Republican Beloin-Saavedra in the first election for Mayor of New Britain since 2011 with no incumbent candidate.
