A Festival, Basketball, Progressive Politics Saturday

There will be food and fun at three different community events today, Saturday — the Fiestas Patronales at St. Mary’s, to the CCAG Barbecue to the Osgood Shootout.

The three different events on August 17, 2019 are in different corners of New Britain, with different themes, but all are intended to bring the community together.

Osgood Shootout

The first event to begin is the 27th Annual Osgood Shootout Basketball Tournament.

The prestigious Tournament, “New England’s Biggest Summer Men’s Basketball Tournament,” has long been known for spirited competition and for bringing the community together. The Tournament, held at New Britain High School, raises funds for scholarships.

The games of the Tournament, held in High School and Open divisions, will start at 9:00am on Saturday, with semifinal and final games starting at 12:45pm on Sunday, August 18th. The Tournament will feature NBA All-Star player for the Detroit Pistons, Andre Drummond.

Parish Festival at St. Mary Church

Starting at 12:00pm at St. Mary Church, the Saint Joachim Catholic Parish will hold the outdoor event part of the congregation’s traditional 2019 Annual Festival.

Saturday is the biggest part of the three-day festival, when the grounds of St. Mary Church is filled with food booths, music and community celebration. The congregation invites others in the community to enjoy the food and festivities.

The festival is typically attended by hundreds of people. It will feature music, Latin food, cotton candy, snow cones, hot dogs and hamburgers, entertainment for children, bouncy houses and a talent contest.

The event, the Fiestas Patronales en Honor a la Virgen de la Asunción, the Annual Festival in Honor of Our Lady of the Assumption is from 12:00pm to 8:00pm on Saturday, August 17th.

CCAG Backyard Barbecue

Starting at 3:00pm, the Connecticut Citizen Action Group (CCAG) will have its Twelfth Annual Backyard Barbecue in New Britain to benefit the statewide organization’s advocacy work.

Former State Senator Terry Gerratana and Dr. Frank Gerratana will host the event at their home at 674 Lincoln Street.

CCAG organizes around politically progressive issues, and says that its work includes,

Organizing door-to-door, raising awareness, finding and training community leaders, citizen lobbyists, and future decision makers. Above all, making sure that the conversations happen. Whether the issue is affordable quality healthcare, democracy, the protection of consumers, or the environment, Citizen Action in all of its forms is critical. Your support now will help to ensure that our voices thunder. Together we will win.

The event, also being billed as the “First Annual Chili Cook-Off,” will held 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Saturday, August 17th. The organization has an RSVP website for the event.
