Scott Breaking Barriers on Assessment Appeals Board
Bringing diversity and new ideas to the city Board of Assessment Appeals, Democrat Candyce Scott, says that she is looking forward to her new role.
Scott was elected to the three-member Board in the November 2, 2021 city elections. The members of the board serve a two year term, and her term extends to 2023.
Observers Scott has spoken to say that it appears that she is one of the first African-American women on the city’s Assessment Appeals Board. Scott says she is proud that her being elected is breaking barriers, and that she plans to bring a fresh perspective to the board.
The Board of Assessment Appeals is city board with powers under state statutes the make changes to the property tax assessments used as the basis of property taxes in the city. It hears and makes decisions on appeals of assessments from taxpayers.
Scott says she is looking forward to serving her community on the Board of Assessment Appeals, and to the work ahead with her new colleagues on the Board.
A Licensed Professional Counselor, Scott holds a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Central Connecticut State University. Co-Owner and Director of Counseling Services for Insight of New England, LLC, she says that she is proud of the ten years she had dedicated to providing counseling services to children and families.
She has also started a fashion line — Candyce’s Fashion — celebrating diversity.
Scott says that, on the Assessment Appeals Board, she plans, “to support residents by listening, reflecting, emphasizing, and validating their feelings and also advocating for equal opportunity for all New Britain citizens.”
The proud mother of Winter Star Scott, Candyce Scott says that she and Winter, “spend time rescuing cats in their community, helping advocate for inmates’ safety and black lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
