Over 150 Attend “Champions of Change” Black History Month Event; Honor Community Leaders
The “Champions of Change” Black History Month event organized by New Britain elected officials, at both the state and local level, was attended by more than 150 people, who joined in honoring, “individuals who have made a lasting impact through their leadership, advocacy, and service to the community,” event organizers said.
Council President Pro-Tempore, Ald Francisco Santiago (D-5) and State Rep Bobby Sanchez (D-25) were joined by Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas (D) and Treasurer Erick Russell (D) in opening the event, the Council’s office said, setting, “the tone for a night of appreciation and reflection on the significance of Black History Month and the contributions of those being recognized.”
Santiago said that, “The strength of our community lies in the people who dedicate themselves to making a difference. Each of our honorees has worked tirelessly to build a better, more inclusive New Britain”
Sanchez said added that, “Black History Month is not just about remembering the past—it is about celebrating those who are making history today. These honorees are shaping the future of our city and inspiring the next generation.”
Gerri Brown-Springer, Ronald Davis, Pansy Kennedy, Kaylen Morgan, Tracy Nixon-Moore, Frankie Scott-Byrd, Karen Weal and Alphonse Wright were honored at the event.
Rep Manny Sanchez (D-24) commented that, “It is an honor to celebrate these individuals who have dedicated their lives to service. Their contributions make our community stronger, and their work will leave a lasting legacy.”
“Pansy Kennedy and all of our honorees,” added Rep David DeFronzo (D-26), “exemplify what it means to lead with integrity and passion. Their dedication makes a real difference in the lives of so many.”
Council Majority Leader, Ald John McNamara (D-4) commented on community engagement, pointing out that, “Frankie Scott-Byrd and our other honorees are living proof that positive change starts at the local level. Their work uplifts our neighborhoods and creates opportunities for all.”
“Karen Weal and each of tonight’s honorees embody the spirit of leadership and perseverance. Their work continues to inspire and drive meaningful change,” said Rep Gary Turco (D-27).
In closing, Sen Rick Lopes (D-6), recognizing, “those who make a difference every day,” said that, “Alphonse Wright and all of our honorees are forces for good in our community. Their efforts remind us that leadership comes in many forms, and we are grateful for their contributions.”
The Council office said that, “The ‘Champions of Change’ tribute served as a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing those who dedicate their lives to making a difference. The event concluded with heartfelt applause and a renewed commitment to honoring and continuing the legacy of Black excellence and leadership.”
