Democratic Sweep in New Britain
On a rainy autumn election day, voters came out in unexpectedly high numbers to deliver a Democratic sweep in New Britain in the 2018 elections.
The candidate driving the election more than anyone was not even on the ballot – Republican President Donald Trump. Trump has polarized the nation and motivated voters to the polls to let their voiced be heard.
Local activists worked hard to turn out the vote, beating back rainy conditions in their work
While political activists were still taking in the overall election results and their impact, the local results were clearer.
The unofficial results showed Democratic candidate for governor and lieutenant governor Ned Lamont and Susan Bysiewicz with 10,727 votes in New Britain, with Republicans Bob Stefanowski and Joe Markley receiving
5,439 votes.
Incumbent Democratic United States Senator Chris Murphy unofficially received 11,859 votes in New Britain to 4,349 for Republican Matthew Corey.
Democrat Jahana Hayes unofficially received 12,028 votes in New Britain for the United States House of Representatives, while Republican candidate Manny Santos received 4,383 votes.
Democratic State Senator Terry Bielinski Gerratana received 11,634 votes unofficially in New Britain and Republican Robert Smedley received 4,481 votes.
Democratic State Representative Rick Lopes received 3,388 votes in the New Britain part of the Twenty-four Fourth State Assembly District, with Republican candidate Sharon Beloin Saavedra receiving 2,021 votes unofficially.
In the Twenty Fifth Assembly District, Democratic State Representative Bobby Sanchez received 3,291 votes, while petitioning candidate Alfred P. Mayo received 76 votes in the unofficial results.
Democratic State Representative Peter Tercyak received 3,698 votes unofficially in the Twenty-Sixth Assembly District, while Republican candidate Tremell J. Collins received 1,601 votes.
In the New Britain portion of the Twenty-Second Assembly District Democratic candidate Richard Ireland, Jr. received 915 votes while Republican State Representative William A. Petit, Jr. received 580 votes.
