Sanchez’ petition would require that, “the appropriate department to conduct a traffic study on North Street to determine ways to mitigate speeding and distracted driving on this street.”

“Residents have complained about excessive speeds and motorists not stopping for school bus drop offs and pickups,” Sanchez’ petition continues.

“In addition,” the petition continues, “there are concerns for pedestrian safety in the area due to erratic driving behavior.”

A City Council petition is procedure in New Britain by which an individual member or more than one member of the Council is empowered to require consideration of action from or a report by a city department or commission. Council members frequently use this process to formally propose that the city take action on a particular concern.

When residents of the area raised concerns about traffic safety on Allen Street in 2018, Ald. Manny Sanchez (D-AL) introduced a Council petition on bringing back stop signs on the corner of Allen Street and Carlton Street.

Residents advocated to the Board of Police Commissioners to act on the petition and were able to celebrate success in the decision to restore the stop signs.

Ald. Iris Sanchez’s petition will has been introduced for the February 13, 2019 Council meeting. The petition calls for city departments to, “Please submit response to the Common Council Office by March 6, 2019.”
