ROOTS and Diaspora to Hold Food Policy Forum

The Diaspora Multicultural Society has announced that it and New Britain ROOTS are hosting a food policy forum in the New Year.

“New Britain ROOTS is collaborating with community members and representatives to help establish a community-led food policy council,” event organizers say. “Food is something we all need to survive, but we don’t all have equal access to.”

“Diaspora and ROOTS invite you to share your experiences, concerns, ideas,” the Diaspora Society says, “or come learn more about the purpose and function of a food policy council.”

The Food Policy Council Public Forum is to be January 9, 2020, from 6:30pm. It is to be held at the Diaspora Multicultural Society, which is located at 90 John Street.

“The more community input, the better!” organizers say.

In inviting people, organizers of the event cite data from DataHaven‘s Greater Hartford Community Wellness Index 2019, showing New Britain residents as having a high number of years of life lost before the age of 75. The data shows New Britain residents’ lost years of life before 75, at 8,250, as larger than than of the state as a whole, at 5,418 and larger than Hartford, at 7,826.

New Britain ROOTS has said that it,

promotes the diversity, education and empowerment of those who farm, produce, prepare, and eat food in our community. We partner with local farmers, advocates for healthy food, and creators of New Britain’s many cultural cuisines, to make make fresh, nutritious food accessible and affordable to all. Roots works with K-12 students, using a social justice and youth development approach. We support youth and adults in entrepreneurial and employment programs focused on sustainable urban agricultural, land stewardship and food systems.

The Diaspora Society has said that,

Diaspora is the first social club of its kind. Our focus is specifically on multiculturalism and bringing a diverse crowd together to commingle and build community. We respect and value the fact that our differences add spice to our lives.

The Diaspora Multicultural Society says, “Come visit Diaspora, a club with a purpose!”
