Working Families Endorses New Britain Legislators

“I’m honored to be endorsed by the Working Families Party,” said State Representative Bobby Sanchez (D-25), one of five New Britain Democratic legislators cross-endorsed by the Connecticut Working Families Party.

Among Democrats joining Sanchez in receiving the Working Famlies Party cross-endorsement are New Britain’s United States Representative, Jahana Hayes (D-5).

Current State Representative Rick Lopes (D-24) who is the Democratic candidate for the State Senate in the Sixth Senatorial District, is also running as the Working Families Party candidate.

Incumbent State Representative Peter Tercyak (D-26), of Twenty-Sixth District is joined by the Democratic Party candidate in the Twenty-Fourth Assembly District, Ald. Manny Sanchez (D-AL), in being Working Families Party candidates, as well.

“Healthcare, clean air, or affordable housing should not be byproducts of privilege,” Carlos Moreno, the Deputy State Director of the Connecticut Working Families Party said. “Candidates endorsed by the Working Families Party understand this, and are willing to support smart, forward thinking policy solutions, centering and investing in the lives of Black, brown and white working class folks with policies like a statewide Green New Deal or a public healthcare option, for example.”

The Working Families Party says that it selects candidates, after, “carefully vetted to ensure that they reflect the views and values of Working Families’ members. Recent polling affirmed Working Families’ members vote for candidates who will fight hard for racial, environmental and economic justice, tax fairness, healthcare reform, strong public education system and immigration reform.”

When one party nominates a candidate of another party, it is referred to as a “cross-endorsement.” In this case, Hayes, Lopes, Sanchez, Tercyak and Sanchez, who are all Democratic Party candidates, are also being supported by the Working Families Party. Each candidate will appear on the ballot twice – once for each party nominating them.

But, the Democrats are not the only candidates being cross endorsed.

Republican State Representative William A. Petit (R-22), is also the candidate of the Independent Party. The Republican candidate in the Twenty-Fourth Assembly District, Alden Russell, is also cross-endorsed by the Independent Party.

All of the candidates will appear on the ballot in the November 3, 2020 general election.
