Rivera Wins Democratic Primary for Probate Judge

Former City Council Majority Leader and Attorney Bill Rivera has won the Democratic Party nomination for Probate Judge.

Rivera has said that he is seeking the position, “because it allows me to continue to work with all types of issues and people who are often overlooked in our society.”

In the election — for Judge of Probate for the probate district that includes New Britain and Berlin — Rivera won the majority of votes in New Britain, while Attorney Robert Scalise received more votes from Berlin. But Rivera’s margin in New Britain was enough to win the nomination in the unofficial results.

On June 2nd, John McNamara reported, for the New Britain Progressive, that,

Connecticut Probate Courts, also known as “family courts” because of the nature of cases before them, primarily have jurisdiction over the administration and oversight of trusts and estates, including probating wills and the administration of estates; overseeing testamentary and living trusts; determining title to real and personal property; and determining the meaning of wills and trusts. Judges of Probate are responsible for overseeing court operations but are also allowed to maintain their own law practices.

Local attorney Michael Carrier announced earlier this year that he would be running as the Republican candidate for the Probate Court position.
