Top 10 of 2022: #6: More City Debt To Pay For Stewart Annual Budgets

On topic, again, of a newspaper’s role as the first draft of history is what is probably the most historically enduring legacy of Republican Mayor Erin Stewart — annual budgets being floated by debt to be paid for by taxpayers long after she is no longer Mayor.

It has been called formal-sounding terms, like, “debt restructuring”, but, in the end, it amounts to adding debt to be paid by taxpayers into the future in order to make budgeting easier for Stewart.

Stewart and her Council Republicans, of course, share responsibility for this along with Council Democrats who have voted for these debt measures over the years. It’s been a bipartisan maneuver.

This topic has made the New Britain Progressive’s Top Ten before and it is added, again, as the first draft of history as one of the New Britain Progressive‘s Top Ten Stories of 2022.
