Mayor Bobby Sanchez (D) has announced that the long-delayed Allen Street Drainage Project is now fully funded, through his work as Mayor, in partnership with Sen Rick Lopes (D-6), Rep Manny Sanchez (D-24), Rep Dave DeFronzo (D-26), Rep Iris Sanchez (D-25) and Rep Gary Turco (D-27) and the support of Gov Ned Lamont (D) and Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (D-5).
“On day one, I made a promise to the Allen Street neighborhood that we would fully fund this project and finally move it forward after more than a decade of waiting,” said Mayor Sanchez. “Today, we are proud to say that promise has been kept. This project is about protecting homes, improving infrastructure, and finally delivering relief to residents who have waited far too long for action.”
“Governor Lamont understood the importance of this project from the beginning and has been a strong partner in helping us deliver long overdue infrastructure improvements for our residents,” Mayor Sanchez said.
“This announcement represents what can happen when local and state leaders work together with urgency and purpose,” said Rep DeFronzo. “Residents along Allen Street have waited long enough for action. Mayor Sanchez made this project a priority from the beginning, and I was proud to work alongside him and the entire New Britain delegation to help secure the funding needed to finally get this done.”
For years, Frank and Sharon Chase have led a coalition of fellow residents in the neighborhood to the southwest of CCSU, including Newbury, Hampton, Allen, Brighton streets and Eton Place and Roxbury Road in advocacy for action to address flooding in their neighborhood, including authoring the Flooding Series column in the New Britain Progressive. For years, residents have waited for the project to be funded and completed.
“For years, Allen Street families have dealt with repeated flooding and uncertainty during major storms,” said Ald John McNamara (D-4) and Ald Luz Ortiz Luna (D) in a joint statement
Ald McNamara and Ald Ortiz Luna, Democratic Council members representing Ward 4, have both advocated for funding for the project for years.
This project represents a major victory for the neighborhood and proof that real progress happens when government works together,” Ald McNamara and Ald Ortiz Luna. “We thank Mayor Sanchez, Governor Lamont, and the entire New Britain legislative delegation for making this long overdue investment a reality.”
