Building Economic Equality-New Britain (BEE-NB) celebrated six months of community organizing at the Diaspora Multicultural Society.
The community empowerment organization held the event at the Diaspora Multicultural Society, Inc. on John Street, celebrating the successes and work of the organization in its first few months.
The event was held on Friday, March 25, 2022.
Pastor Gervais Barger of Peace Missionary Ministries, who is the President of the Black Ministerial Alliance of New Britain, offered encouragement at the Celebration for the work of the BEE-NB and its activists.
Dozens of people were present to join in the Celebration.
Several dozen people enjoyed food brought by participants, listened to music and enjoyed good company at the Diaspora club.
BEE-NB, organized in 2021, has already been active in community organizing around economic, education and other issues.
The group successfully organized to prevent the repeal of the city’s Living Wage ordinance, has advocated for an inclusive process for choosing the city’s new schools superintendent and organized for a rally to support of Superintendent Nancy Sarra.
People in at the Community attendance spoke about the importance of community organizing in New Britain.
Activists spoke about issues facing the city, including education, housing, economic development, fairness and equality.
Members of the community joined in sharing aspirations for the future of New Britain.
Participants enjoyed games and and discussions about organizing for the future.
The Diaspora Multicultural Society, Inc. says that it, “is a diverse social club that hosts events that appeal to many interests- from socially conscious programming to partying/laid-back good times.”
The Society is located at 90 John Street.
