“Paint Your Healing” Wellness Class Planned

Continuing work to prioritize mental health and holistic wellness in the Hardware City, Ald Candyce Scott (D-3) and community leader Luis Malave are bringing a unique, art-centered healing space to downtown New Britain.

The event, titled “Paint Your Healing,” is part of the “Write to Rise” class series. It is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, at 6:30pm at 114 W. Main Street.

Organizers describe the class as more than just an art lesson. Instead, it is designed as a “community-based healing space” that integrates mental health awareness with creative expression. The initiative specifically aims to support residents impacted by trauma, homelessness, and the daily stressors that disproportionately affect New Britain’s most vulnerable populations.

The workshop comes on the heels of Alderwoman Scott’s recent advocacy in the Common Council, where she has championed resolutions to declare mental health a citywide priority.

“Mental health is a vital thread woven into every aspect of life in New Britain,” Scott has previously stated. “It is our collective responsibility to empower individuals with proactive healthy measures.”

The “Paint Your Healing” session will be led by instructor Luis Malave and follows a four-pillar approach:

  • Paint: Using canvas painting as a tool for self-expression (no experience required).
  • Reflect: Engaging in “raw, honest, and human” conversations about mental health.
  • Restore: Practicing holistic wellness through breathing, mindfulness, and journaling.
  • Share: Providing a platform for participants to share their stories or let their art speak for them.

The event is supported by LEAD (Leaders for Educational Advocacy and Diversity).

Participants can expect a supportive environment, a “mental health moment,” and light refreshments. The organizers emphasize that the space is intended to be a “safe space for emotional expression,” promoting the integration of mind, body, and spirit.
