7th Annual Hoops for Homeless Planned

The annual Hoops for Homeless benefit basketball tournament is back this April for a seventh year, bringing basketball to downtown New Britain while helping homeless children.

Organizers say that the,

Hoops for the Homeless is a three-on-three basketball tournament started in New Britain to benefit homeless youth. The event is organized by a board of local volunteers. All proceeds from this event are given to local projects that directly address homelessness of children and families in our cities. Priority will be given to projects that directly work to alleviate child homelessness.

The 2019 tournament will be held on Saturday, April 27th, with a rain date planned for Sunday, April 28th. It will be held at Central Park in downtown New Britain. The organization’s website says that the event starts with check-in beginning at 9:00am, with games going until 3:00pm.

Event organizers are registering teams in four age divisions:

  • Rookies, grades four and five.
  • Junior All Stars, grades six to eight.
  • Ballers, “competitive adult, experience, athletic.”
  • Hot Shots, “non-competitive adult, fun-focused.”

The registration forms available on the organization’s website say that the deadline to register teams is April 20, 2019.

The fee to register is $50 per team. The event’s website says that,

No team will be turned down due to lack of funds, but we encourage youth teams to be sponsored by local organizations. Teams can receive a waiver by volunteering to help organize the event. Please contact us for details.

The organization’s website says, that, in the three-versus-three tournament, there are a, “Minimum of 3 games played in a round-robin format followed by playoffs.” Tournament rules on the website include a score limit of eleven points, “Win by 2, first to 15 points or 15 minutes end time.”

Hoops for Homeless says that programs supported by proceeds from the event include that Boys and Girls Club of New Britain, the Consolidated School District of New Britain’s Road to Recovery (R&R) Center support program for homeless students, the Friendship Service Center of New Britain and the Prudence Crandall Center.
