List of Party Committee Endorsed Candidates Published

The candidates endorsed by the town committees of the New Britain Democratic and Republican parties have been released.

In Connecticut, major party nominations start with an endorsement by each party’s local town committee or a multi-town convention. The candidates who are endorsed become that party’s nominees at the expiration of the deadline to file petition signatures. However, if challengers succeed in collecting enough primary signatures, the nomination is made by everyday voters who are registered in that party.

The deadline for party members challenging for their parties’ nomination to submit petitions with enough signatures to qualify for a primary is August 11, 2021. In 2021, any primary would be held on September 14th.

Town and City Clerk Mark Bernacki (R) has released the list of names endorsed by the Democratic and Republican town committees. Under state law, town clerks are responsible for compiling a, “list of the persons endorsed as candidates,” and to have that list, “available for public distribution.”

Democratic leader and Mayoral candidate Veronica T. DeLandro and political activist and Democratic Mayoral candidate Alicia Hernandez Strong have both said that they plan to collect petition signatures to send the Democratic Party nomination for Mayor to a September 14th primary.

Strong said she has formed a “People’s Slate” with City Council candidates, Richard Lacourciere and Nate Simpson, saying that they plan, “on collecting the requisite signatures over the next two weeks to qualify for the ballot for the Democratic Primary.”
