Black Democratic Committee Chooses Leaders

The Black Democratic Committee of New Britain has announced new leadership for the organization, founded and led by legendary community activist, Mr. Alton Brooks.

The organization, also known as the Black Political Action Committee of New Britain, says that it,

actively seeks political candidates of color to endorse and assist with campaigning. In addition, the committee sets out to improve democracy in New Britain while ensuring proper representation of the Black community in all political, educational and community centered spaces

Former City Council member Colin Ivan Osborn (D-2) was elected as the President of the Committee, and Board of Assessment Appeals member Candyce Scott (D) was elected as its Vice-President. Former Board of Education member Violet Jiminez Sims (D) was elected as its Secretary, community leader Jan Edwards-Sykes as Treasurer and Michael Briscoe as Parliamentarian.

The organization says that the new leadership was selected to carry forward, “the mission to improve democracy and represent the Black and underrepresented communities of New Britain,” adding that, “The Black Democratic Committee of New Britain allies with other communities whose principles and values parallel those of the committee.”

The organization is planning a Meet and Greet event on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Diaspora Multicultural Society, located at 90 John Street.
