Friends of the New Britain Library Hosting Presentation on 1896 Bristol Railroad Disaster

Friends of the New Britain Library are hosting a presentation “Into the River: The Story of Bristol’s 1896 Railroad Disaster.”

“Don’t miss this free presentation, sponsored by the Friends of the New Britain Library,” event organizers said.

“On February 6, 1896,” Friends of the New Britain Library say, introducing the presentation, “the bridge across the Pequabuck River collapsed during a Nor’easter. Twenty men were thrown into the freezing river and six men died. Three of those men were residents of New Britain.

In the presentation, event organizers say, “Rit Carter will present the story of this disaster, why it happened, where it happened, and what the disastrous consequences were. This under reported, and under studied, event is a fascinating bit of Bristol/New Britain history. Please join us for Rit’s 45-minute presentation followed by a Q and A with light refreshments.”

The presentation is to be on Thursday, June 11th at 6:00pm in the New Britain Public Library Community Room.

“You may sign up on the New Britain Public Library’s website https://www.newbritainlibrary.org/event/friends-program-8131,” Friends of the New Britain Library say.
