NBMAA and Ald Scott Hosting Black Business Expo at the Museum – Access for All Community Day
In celebration of Black Business Month, Alderwoman Candyce Scott is partnering with the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA) to host a Black Business Expo, the Museum’s Access for All Community Day.
The event is Saturday, August 8th from 10am-2pm.
The event aims to empower local entrepreneurs to connect, thrive, and flourish within the community. For Scott, the expo is a continuation of her ongoing advocacy for local commerce; two years ago, she introduced the city’s first Black Business Resolution to the City of New Britain.
“When we support the locals, we build a stronger city for everyone,” Scott said. “All of our local businesses matter, and minority-owned small businesses deserve extra support as they work to overcome unique challenges. Our city’s economic future depends on it. We are not just hosting an event, we are building economic opportunity.”
The August 8th expo will coincide with the museum’s monthly community initiative, meaning admission to the NBMAA will be entirely free for all attendees. The event will feature a wide array of local vendors, with free vending space specifically provided for all participating non-profit organizations.
Throughout the day, visitors can expect special guest speakers and a cafe takeover by The House of Goats, who will be serving their signature chicken wings, drinks, and famous Rasta Pasta. At 11:30 a.m., the Nomadic Drummers will perform a live drumming circle.
Francis Estrada, Assistant Director of Learning & Engagement at the NBMAA, emphasized the importance of these community-centered events for the institution.
“While the New Britain Museum of American Art is celebrated nationally for its extraordinary collection, our most meaningful impact is often felt much closer to home—in the health, vibrancy, and sense of belonging experienced by our neighbors here in New Britain,” Estrada said. “We are proud to deepen our community connections each month by collaborating with local artists and engaging our neighbors to present Free Access for All Community Days filled with live music, performances, art activities, and local vendors.”
Alderwoman Scott hopes the city will turn out in high numbers to support the initiative, noting that the event is free and open to everyone.
